RHoK Warsaw ROCKED!!!

Published by Aleksandra Puchta

For the first time RHoK Warsaw kicked off on Saturday morning at an amazing place at Warsaw University of Technology. The event preceded two preparation workshops for hackers and subject matter experts, that were held a week before.

RHoK Warsaw gathered more than 30 hackers and subject matter experts ready to hack for good. Out of many ideas, eight finally emerged and inspired intense work and fruitful cooperation between people with really different background and experience.

One of the project was supposed to bridge the gap in the polish healthcare system for people suffering from cancer. It is called Drzewo życia (Tree of life) and is a social media system for people having cancer inspired and created in cooperation with www.alivia.org.pl foundation. It is supposed to provide support apart from public healthcare system.

"Where’s that bike path?!" was another portal campaigning for a better bike path infrastructure in Warsaw as well as improvement of cyclists' safety on the roads. The idea of the portal consists of a user generated content project, where cyclists can add their routes and comment on existing paths/roads traffic in order to facilitate, promote and raise cycling awareness.

Among other portals, there was also the idea of a portal for NGO’s for youth, co-learning platform Wantbetter.net and advertising portal for animals’ adoptions.

Beyond portals many teams worked on applications. The project Klimat bez sadzy (@anwajler and @viroos, @mdevpl) developed application showing the level of air pollution in Warsaw. While, Kooperatywa spożywcza made an app for making food ordering in co-operatives easier.

Finally, a team of engineers decided to deal with displaying financial disclosures of polish parliamentary envoys. The data needed first a lot of processing and cleaning. As the team worked tirelessly throughout the day and night, they managed to do the hardest part. The team wants to cooperate in the future development with Stowarzyszenie 61 and project Mam prawo wiedzieć.

The event was a great example of successful combination of the skills of technical experts with energy and creativity of social activists. We can’t wait for the next edition of RHoK!

Wciąż brakuje nam osób technicznych, dla których cały czas są miejsca! Byliśmy natomiast zmuszeni stworzyć listę rezerwową dla osób 'społecznych', by zachować równowagę. Zapisujcie się mimo to. Zrobimy wszystko, żeby każdy mógł wziąć udział i żebyście mogli spędzić ten czas jak najbardziej produktywnie :]
