WaterHackathon Tel Aviv

WaterHackathon is a hackathon dedicated to hacking problems related to water-related issues, such as: access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation; flooding and drought (i.e. climate change issues); irrigation and watershed management; and environmental pollution.

We invite water experts, software  developers, engineers and GIS experts interested in creating innovative solutions to solve today's water problems to register.

Yossi Vardi, the Israeli internet guru, will be a guest lecturer at WaterHackathon Tel Aviv!

Technical Issues

  1. During the event, we encourage you to use Binfire – a website that does online project management and collaborations. This site is useful for keeping track of documents, status updates, and synchronizing collaborations. Binfire includes a group chat and whiteboard feature. We think this would be very useful once you form teams, and the founder of Binfire will be present at the event to answer any questions you may have.
All you have to do is to register through the main sign-up page as a 'free' user (http://www.binfire.com/sign-up/). After confirming your registration, you can send an email to support@binfire.com and write 'Binfire_H2O' in the subject and body of the email. Upon doing this, Binfire will upgrade your account for 3 months so that you will have more features and space at your disposal during the WaterHackathon.
  2. Please refer to http://www.waterhackathon.org/technology-licensing-for-water-hackathon-projects/ to read about the open-source policy of the event, and familiarize yourself with existing licenses.

WaterHackathon Tel Aviv: less than two weeks away!

Published by Dan Nesher

Lack of safe water and adequate sanitation is the world’s single largest cause of illness, responsible for more than two million deaths every year.    As the global population grows, and demands on natural resources increase, the sustainable management of water is acquiring new urgency.

New ideas, better data and innovative instruments are needed to respond to the global water crisis.

WaterHackathon Tel Avivwill be taking place simultaneously in Bangalore, Cairo, Kampala, Lima, London, Nairobi, and Washington D.C.  Technologists will work hand-in-hand with water experts in their countries in an intensive weekend of hacking technical solutions to help communities address water problems.

Programmers, designers, engineers, techies, data specialists and concerned citizens are invited to come to the  Faculty of Engineering Software Building at Tel Aviv University at 9AM on October 23 to work with developers and experts around the globe to brainstorm, code, mash up data and win prizes for apps that can make water safer, more accessible, and more sustainable for all.  Register at www.rhok.org/events.

Water = Life: Israel's Chronic Water Shortage

Published by Dan Nesher

Do you find yourself stressed about wasting water when you shower or wash the dishes?  You are not the only one; Israel has suffered from severe water shortage for years.  Citizens in Israel are urged to "not waste a drop."    National parks have been put under a water conservation regime.  Imagine if beautiful landmarks in Israel like the waterfalls at Ein Gedi, or the Sachne hot springs no longer existed? Israel's pure water sources have been deteriorating over time, and a lot of the reason for this is because of pollution.  We need to find solutions to this problem; that is where you come in.  It is time to connect engineers with people in the water industry to figure out what to do about this crucial situation.  Participate in WaterHackathon Tel Aviv and take part in a lifechanging, global event!
