Tweak the Tweet - Video

We've designed a flexible tool to empower citizen reporters to provide data needed by emergency responders using existing behavior and communication tools. Our goals are to empower citizen sensors, give emergency responders the tools they need to use these sensors quickly and effectively, and provide more and valuable raw data to good samaritan developers to create customized applications that analyze and interpret data during an emergency event. This "hack" is a flexible, disaster-specific, hash-tag grammar, distributed by FEMA or another emergency provider during an event, that provides users a template for uploading data via existing channels, i.e. Twitter.

Disaster Mesh - Video

During disasters, Internet infrastructure may go down, but local wireless hardware can still be useful.  The concept is to allow wireless laptops, routers, and mobile devices to create a mesh network so that critical information can be shared.  Such a network could host disaster management applications, such as Sahana.  Work completed for today is a bootable USB stick that has mesh networking and Sahana preconfigured. This idea was hatched out of the Mesh Networking talk during yesterday's breakout session.
