Summary:
We propose a water trading platform. Water rights or water abstraction licence holders log on to post what they are willing to buy/sell and when and under what conditions. The iPad App posts this on a map, recommends potential trade partners based on catchment and water availability.
It is proposed that the access to the trading platform is based on Open API, as this will third parties to develop web and mobile applications to interface and interact with the platform.
Why we are working on this problem:
Prior appropriation water rights limit new consumers of the water and there is little recourse to obtain sufficient water quantities to meet their demands.
There is also limited incentive to improve efficiency of water use unless the water is valued appropriately.
In many countries governments are trying to use and allocate scarce water more efficiently, especially during water scarce periods
Water trading moves water to higher value uses (e.g. the environment or urban users) and can be a new and welcome source of revenue for farmers
What we accomplished during the event:
We mapped out the functionality that would be necessary in a water rights trading platform, based on the water license and rights information available from the regulators and the information that would be needed by the people interested in buying or selling their water rights - both in the short term as well as long term.
Created an proof of concept iPad application interface of how the relevant information should be laid out,
