Spork: Where a good meal goes a long way

Revision #1Recommend a SolutionFork

Food insecurity is an issue that plagues countries around the world, and especially in Georgia. In an effort to help to combat this problem in Georgia, Team Spork chose to create a platform that would connect users (nonprofits/organizations) who serve individuals and families in need of food, with restaurants, schools and large events (suppliers). Not only will this help to tend to a basic human need; it will also help decrease the food loss that takes place in restaurants across the city.

Statistics:

- 27.9% of Georgia’s children live in food insecure households

- 1.7 million Georgians (17.9%) are living in poverty up from 1.6 million (16.5%) in 2009

-1.4 million Georgians receive emergency food from partner agencies of Georgia food banks

Example:

In January 2009, Winn-Dixie Restaurant Inc., launched a food program that  in two years recovered 8 million pounds of perishable items, which equaled to more than 6 million nutritious meals. The Florida based restaurant was able to supply food banks across the south east with meals.

User Stories:

By using the Spork website, mobile app and SMS, restaurants will be able to alert registered nonprofit organizations when food donations become available.

Our platform provides a central location for donors and nonprofits to connect with little to no cost or effort.
