What is LandTrackr?
Landtrackr is a platform for encouraging transparent discussions between communities, developers and civic government.
Notice, Contribute, CreateNotice
In a literal sense, Landtrackr connects to city data sources to import the building permits of active projects by land developers. These building sites are then populated on a map for easy reference and act as the focus point for conversations.
Communities may also take notice of changes or opportunities in their community and draft their own proposals of what to do with “soft sites” and areas of interest or concern within their geographically designated region.
Land developers may also monitor the overall values of a community, as well as test out proposals for feedback for potential projects.
Contribute
After setting up a personal scoring criteria and a public profile, Landtrackr’s users can contribute in the following ways:
- They leave feedback, through discussion, and marking proposals as something they’re in favor of, not in favor of or indifferent, on both proposals and active permits.
- Community animators work with external agencies to create proposals and questions that encourage continued participation.
- Take the discussions into other forums by referencing public links of proposals/permits and aggregated data.
Create
It’s the goal of Landtrackr to create forums that allow voices that are not only heard, but representative of their values for their community. With that in mind, users may:
- Create reports reflective of participant’s true feelings on a decision, including printed reports that are suitable for presentation during public consultation.
- Analyse reports through the filters of their own interest.
- Create their own proposals to dig deeper into issues and opinions.
Tools for communities and civic engagementCommunity animators
An administrative role in the site that can be designated by a LandTrackr local initiator, a municipal government or appointed by a community group, has an important role in the community building of the site.
- They help set the standard by maintaining the baseline, persistent questions that are available to all, regardless of the status of current permits or other proposals.
- They can review and process more of the site’s raw data to generate blog posts and reports that can create discussions that are important to cities and their residents.
- They can facilitate learning sessions and signups for Landtrackr in more traditional community settings like town halls; ward and business association meetings.
City consultation
City’s can benefit from both the personal discussions, the regional data and “social barometer” data collected from the site.
By offering a realtime, continuous platform for residents to discuss the building and land development issues affecting their lives, the efficiency of designated review and consultation periods can be increased thanks to the more active and measurable participation of the people it affects.
Just the beginning
Landtrackr is currently be developed by a small team in conjunction with Toronto’s Random Hacks of Kindness event.
The platform is currently being tested with data supplied by Toronto Open.
Thanks to the development platform, Daimio, the platform is flexible enough to work with many different data sources, along with generating its own API for others to work with.
Over time, the data that is generated may be analyzed further by site administrators and combined with other data to create powerful information sources that can help shape the future growth, protection and integrity of any municipality.
