Water Access Map of the World - Accessible Water Sources and their Attributes

Summary:

Why we are working on this problem:

The proposed solution will provide a web, smart phone, and text message based solution for anyone to collect data about accessible water and submit to a central Geographic Information System (GIS) database. The data will be made available for viewing, editing, and analyzing through open Web Map Services [1]and Web Feature Services[2] for easy integration with other websites and applications.

[1] A Web Map Service (WMS) is a standard protocol for serving georeferenced map images over the Internet that are generated by a map server using data from a GIS database.

[2] A Web Feature Service (WFS) provides an interface allowing requests for geographical features across the web using platform-independent calls.

What we accomplished during the event:

1. Web Map and Feature services hosted at Esri server.

2. iPhone/iPad app to create and edit water source points, community centers and their attributes, including photos.

3. Open Rich Internet Map for create and edit water source points, community centers and their attributes.

4. 10,000+ water source points from Liberia uploaded to the map

5. Overlay with Precipitation forecast map

Next steps:

1. Hackathon @ Tel-Aviv is picking up from D.C. event.

2. Android App and other smart phones

3. Text Messaging capability

4. Capture paths to water sources from community centers (open street map)

5. Volunteers/Organizations for ground level data capture

6. Integration of existing datasets into the World Water Access Map

7. Applications built on top of this data (mashups)

Community help:

International water NGOs, Mobile/Web developers, Policy, Hardware vendors (supply inexpensive smartphones)
