Where's that bike path?!

Summary:

The purpose of the "Where’s that bike path?!" portal is campaigning for a better bike path infrastructure in Warsaw as well as improvement of cyclists' safety on the roads. The idea of the portal consists of a user generated content project, where cyclists can add their routes and comment on existing paths/roads traffic in order to facilitate, promote and raise cycling awareness amongst authorities as well as general public. The portal is also intended to provide a space for Warsaw's cycling community and cooperation with other organisations campaigning for the cause.

Why we are working on this problem:

The idea to launch the project was born from our experience as cyclists in Warsaw. The city is hostile to cyclists and the bike paths network is rather poor. While there has been a steady increase in the number of new, often unconnected bike paths, they are of a short distance, poor quality (the surface is built of a very low quality causeway!) and often end very abruptly, leading to nowhere. Moreover, there is a very low awareness of cyclists on the roads amongst car and bus drivers, making cycling on main roads dangerous. Many cyclists therefore chose alternative routes, often cycling on pavements,(which is against Polish law), and via city parks. We have thus thought that there is a need to create a portal with alternative bike routes, including many different surfaces, which would also constitute a forum and experience sharing platform for cyclists. The idea of the portal is to be a user generated content and a source for change of attitudes amongst local authorities and public in general, leading to a bike friendly city.

What we accomplished during the event:

We have conducted an extensive research of other portals which promote the cause in other cities and countries. Several projects have inspired us and we have come up with our portal prototype. We have used the open-source bbbike.org and we have utilised its search engine in order to map and track already added paths and routes. We have also built new visual interface (branding, page layout, functionality, usability, graphics) as well as prepared a comprehensive prototype presentation.
